Document Journal editor-in-chief Nick Vogelson will announce the winner of the inaugural The New Vanguard Photography Prize on October 18, 2018, the day on which an exhibition dedicated to The New Vanguard opens at Aperture Foundation in New York.

The winner of the prize will be featured in Document’s Fall/Winter 2018 issue, with a limited-edition cover and a 24-page fashion editorial created with Document fashion director Sarah Richardson. The issue hits newsstands this month.

The New Vanguard is an original curatorial platform created to discover and celebrate emerging visionary talents. It is presented by Document and Calvin Klein, with support from Ford Models and Aperture Foundation, powered by Swipecast, and with imaging by Urban Studios.

For the inaugural prize, Document invited emerging talents of all ages and backgrounds from more than 50 countries around the world to submit their work, with the objective of discovering unheralded photographers across fashion and the fine arts.

Selected by a jury of experts from a pool of more than 1,100 submissions, this season’s 25 semifinalists, hailing from more than a dozen countries, were offered the chance to be featured on Document’s online edition and to display their work in an exhibition at Aperture Foundation, in New York, from October 18-23, 2018.

The five finalists—Lucie Khahoutian, Quil Lemons, Jan Philipzen, Igor Pjörrt, and Ward Roberts—were determined by the jury, as well as 17,000 public votes from around the world. These visionary photographers were also given the opportunity to shoot a special fashion story for Document’s online edition.
